3 Keys to Help You Give a Better Talk - Cover
Rich-Nash.9-2016

HI, I’M RICHARD NASH —

When I was 19, I learned 3 KEYS that will help you give a better talk:

  1. Have an objective
  2. Use examples
  3. Emphasize application

Those principles, which President David O. McKay shared in 1905, will reduce your fear and increase your effectiveness next time you speak in a meeting of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

(and get one for your high councilman)!

There’s a promise here —

I promise you: If you remember President McKay’s 3 keys next time you speak — even if you stop scrolling at the end of this sentence, even if you don’t buy the book — you’ll enhance the lives of everyone who listens to you (and your own life).

10 things 3 Keys will teach you:

Here’s what you’ll learn as you follow the simple, soothing advice shared by President McKay, who was the ninth president of The Church of Jesus Christ and one of the most effective speakers in the church’s history:

  1. How to reduce the crushing anxiety you feel when you speak
  2. How the first words of your talk can help you feel less nervous
  3. How stating a specific objective when you begin your talk is more engaging and more relevant than trying to be engaging or relevant
  4. Why stories may be the most important part of a talk
  5. How experience-based questions can help you lead better discussions in a church lesson
  6. Five simple ways to find stories to illustrate your next talks or lessons
  7. Why stories are usually the most convincing way to explain your objective
  8. The scientifically-proven benefits of telling stories when you speak
  9. How repetition helps people live the principles you share in a talk
  10. Was Jerry Seinfeld right — could you die from not having your talk written out word-for-word next time you speak?

Who I Am:

I’m an engaging speaker (sometimes just to the birds in my backyard) and a writer. I worked in healthcare management and marketing for 35 years and previously was a speechwriter and jokewriter in business and politics.

I’ve lectured at conferences and seminars of medical, professional, and community groups on subjects including living well, customer service, stress management, employee engagement, and humor at work (which should never be an oxymoron). (Unless you’re an undertaker.)

I seek every day to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I’ve served as a bishop, a youth leader, and a teacher. My previous book, Lengthen Your Smile, is a best-selling collection of brief stories (most of them funny) that illustrate gospel principles.

God bless you as you share your stories and insights —
